I finished Hemlock Grove over the weekend and loved it. For those who don’t know what it is, the summary is that there is a grizzly murder in a small town called Hemlock Grove in Pennsylvania and there are two teens that take it upon themselves to solve the mystery.

I found it to be a little Hardy Boys with weird and supernatural overtones. The two protagonists are very interesting as their relationship evolves and you really see what its like for two people who never have friends to finally make some.

In general I find the show leaves more questions open then answering them, but I enjoy that. There is a great degree of mystery and macabre in the show. It takes itself serious enough to not just become True Blood or any of the current “monster shows”.

I found the liberties they took with traditional supernatural identities very refreshing and interesting. The special effects were also particular awesome and gruesome. As a side note, the musical theme was also really nice. It could be used in lots of varying scenes and had a great creepy vibe going.

I ordered the book so I could get a fully fleshed idea of what the show is based on, but the author directed and wrote the teleplay for the show, so I doubt it will be far off from the source material.

I would recommend this show to anyone that isn’t afraid of a little gore and likes the supernatural. I would also ask people to check it out, so that Netflix can keep pumping out original content.

I got to play with some Izzet cards on the weekend as well as some of the newer ones from Dragon’s Maze. I’m not usually an Izzet fan, but the synergy between some of the new cards made them seem like a viable and aggressive guild to build around.

It’ll have some decent burn and some decent control, all while pumping and swinging with some large creatures. I’m hoping for a good balance with it all. My only concern will be card draw if I’m spending my spells too fast.

I finished Bioshock: Infinite last night. What an amazing experience. EA, Irrational Games and 2K have crafted a fantastic game. What’s more impressive is that it is a fantastic sequel to the first Bioshock. It helps tie everything together.

I won’t go into detail, but if you’re playing this, buckle up, it gets bananas. If you aren’t playing this, and you’re a fan of FPS with truly incredible story, I would highly recommend it. You don’t need to play the other Bioshock games to understand, but it does help a tiny bit for some easter eggs.

Just outstanding. Still reeling from it. The perfect example of how videogames are a strong art form.

So I’ve been exploring the Kamigawa block because a lot of older Magic players really don’t like the set. I was talking to a few and I understand now that it came out during a time when the previous block was greatly overpowered in comparison. So standard was essentially ruled by the previous block until the new one after Kamigawa came out.

That aside tho, in 2012,Wizards put out a Night of the Ninja Planechase set that brought back some of the Blue / Black Ninja cards, so I decided to build a U/B ninja deck!

Its been a lot of fun so far, Ninjitsu is an interesting keyword. People can’t block some creatures and then POOF ninja takes its place and does more damage plus a cool effect usually.

Casual Magic can be a lot of fun and building obscure decks under $50 is even better.

I finished watching Young Justice last weekend. The ending was fantastic but sad.

Young Justice was a show that I looked forward to every time I watched it. Not only was it one of the best comic based cartoons I’ve ever seen, but it was about more than that. It was about these young heroes separating themselves from their mentors and forging their own path. It was about growing up and all the hardships that come with that process.

The show focused on the evolution of the characters and their relationships more than the bad guys they fought. It focused on heartbreak, betrayal, love and loss. All while providing climactic action and intense story.

If you haven’t seen this show, I would strongly suggest it. Even if you’re not a fan of comics, you can relate to some of the problems these characters put themselves through. I can only hope that when I have children, there can be a show that I not only love, but respect enough that we can watch together.

I finished the new Tomb Raider last night. What an amazing game. I can’t stress enough how everyone should play this. It has great action, satisfyingly difficult puzzles and a great sense of accomplishment when throughout the game. Not to mention its absolutely gorgeous.

Besides all the things that make it a great game, it also reinvents a classic character we’ve had for years. No longer is Lara Croft an invincible, female Indiana Jones. She starts out as a regular (an attractive model, but with meat on her bones and seemingly enough space for all her organs) person, and throughout the game she gets the shit kicked out of her physically and emotionally.

She becomes a survivor. The game is brutal to her. She’ll often get 3 steps forward and then get pushed 2 steps back. Everything is a struggle for her, which makes it so that when you finish challenges you face in the game, you’re all the more satisfied with what you’ve done.

In the end she is scarred, filthy, and covered with her friends and enemies blood, but she makes it out alive.

I hope to see games use this as a shining example to help base their work on and I cannot wait to play another instalment in this newly imagined franchise.
